The Power of Intention in Islam

Niyyah is an Islamic concept that holds a great importance for every believer of Islam. The value of a person’s action is relying on his intension, motive or objective. The derivation of every action is based on intention that we do. Intention reflects our motives of why we plan any action or do so.

Most acts of devotion and worship require a Muslim’s determination to have the intention in his heart such as obligatory Prayers, Fasting, Hajj and Zakat. A Muslim must make an intention for sake of Allah without seeking any worldly benefits.

The intention can be defined as the core of the deed and its supportive pillar. It is the substance for every single action that is one of the conditions which have to be achieved formerly for the deeds to be completed.

There is a very popular quote regarding intention. “The Heart is where the intention is formed”.

Our heart has such a magnificent influence on our bodies and intentions as well. Hence our hearts must be in a pure state to avoid causing harm to us and others.

Rules and Provisions

For our intention to be valid and acceptable, it must meet some elementary conditions, which are as follow:

The person needs to be a Muslim who believes in the existence of Allah, a stable adult who is accountable for his acts. The person needs to be fully aware of what he intends to do, and if he intends to fast, he must have all the needed information about fasting and its conditions.

Finally, a Muslim should refrain from any act that could indulge or disprove his intention. Intention doesn’t require a declaration by the tongue, only needs to be acknowledged by the heart.

Types of Intention in Islam

The intention is diligently associated with most acts of worship. Most of the obligatory duties require the presence of an intention, such as:

Ablution

A Muslim must aim to lift the Quran and ablution for prayer.

Prayer

The pronunciation of the intention does not necessitate only recalling it.

Ihram for Hajj and Umrah

The intention to perform Hajj and Umrah does not only resolve in the heart but contains Ihram too.

Fasting

Fasting is not allowed without preceding intention.

Actually, when we are mindful of the intention of our actions and aims, it helps us to be unprejudiced. We incline to be extra conscious of the things that will help us to accomplish our goals and the things that obstruct them. Our intention also helps us with what needs to be ended and how things must be done. This reflects our principles and values.
